Sally Pearson Calls For Prize Money At The Olympics

Sally Pearson, while addressing the media earlier this week said that athletes just like musicians should be paid for whatever that they do.

According to Pearson it doesn’t seem fair that athletes like her don’t make money from wining certain Olympic events while other sports athletes can be able to make a lot of money from just winning a certain event, for instance Wimbledon, where the winner pockets $2.6 million and $1.62 million for winning the Augusta Masters, while athletes like her get nothing for winning gold.

"People come for the entertainment from the athletes -- we are entertaining them, we are entertainers" Pearson, who is an Australian, said to Alex Thomas, a news anchor at CNN.
"Entertainers get paid every single time they step up onto a stage, and that's exactly what we're doing in a sporting sense."

Although billion of viewers tuned in to watch the last Olympics which was held in England that saw more than 10,000 athletes compete against each other across 302 events so as to emerge at the top no bonuses in terms of money were handed out to the winners due to the fact that the IOC currency states that winners of the event should only be given gold, silver, bronze as well as a bouquet of flowers.

"I can see why they don't, and I'm sure they want to keep it like that, they want to keep it pure," added Pearson. "To be honest we're all still going to turn up whether we get paid or not. But the Games wouldn't happen without the athletes."
Currently athletes are forced to rely on the money that they get from sponsorship when competing at such events.
