Michael Phelps to Return from Suspension

Michael Phelps to Return from Suspension

Former Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps will be returning to competitive swimming after a six-month suspension due to arrest for driving intoxicated. His big return is scheduled to be at a meet being held in Mesa, Arizona.

The 18-time Olympic gold medalist showed his enthusiasm via Twitter when he tweeted "My suspension is finally up! Time to get back in the pool and race again! Looking forward to #mesa!!".

In total, Phelps has managed to take home 58 gold medals, 11 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals while competing over the course of his career.

Phelps had a previous charge for driving under the influence back in 2004. Last September, he was pulled for his second offence, in which he pleaded guilty. The court sentenced him to a one-year suspended prison term and a probationary period of 18 months.

Before being suspended, the swimmer had qualified for a number of events, including the 100-metre butterfly, 100 free and 200 individual medleys. These events are going to be taking place at the world meet.

Along with his suspension, Phelps had been suspended from this year’s World Championships, which will be held in Russia. However, there have been rumors that he may be able to participate and compete.

Phelps has recently decided to come out of his Olympic retirement and has been preparing himself for the upcoming 2016 games, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is considered one of the most decorated Olympic athletes.
